Best Place to Travel Around the World

TravelSince Fiji is a stopover on Fiji Airlines, you will find plenty of flight deals to the country. Many backpackers take advantage of this and a small backpacker community has emerged. This means cheap guesthouses, transportation, and activities, especially in the popular Yasawa Islands.

Even if you are not a backpacker, you can take advantage of all these deals and save money. Fiji is one of the best budget destinations in the region and should not be missed.

Central America Wilderness in Costa Rica
Want to visit ancient ruins, trek in the jungle, surf and eat delicious food with some tourists around? Travel to the smaller countries of Central America - think El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Here you'll find most budget hotels for around $15 a night, meals for $3, most bus tours for the same price, and beer for less than a dollar.

Belize, Panama, Costa Rica - these are expensive destinations by regional standards. If you travel to the central Central American countries, you can get by for $40 a day as a backpacker or splurge up to $60 a day and stay largely. Your money goes really far in this part of the world.

3. Cambodia

While you could list the whole of Southeast Asia, Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the region – it's affordable, beautiful, and the locals are incredibly hospitable. You can get a private, air-conditioned room for $20 USD, street food for $2, and nationwide transportation for $20. If you're spending about $50 a day, you're living a big life. It's cheaper than all of its neighbors, just as beautiful, and filled with some of the best people in the world. This is one of the cheapest backpacking destinations in the world!

4. China

Ever since Marco Polo traveled the Silk Road, China has attracted travelers. While the days of China being a super-cheap destination are long gone, the country remains a budget destination—and one of the cheapest in Asia—but with a caveat. You need to get out of the big cities. Sure, cities are still a bargain. Hostels cost less than $20 per day, meals cost $2-5 per meal, and local transportation to cities costs less than a dollar. But, the country becomes even cheaper when you go off the beaten path and interiors. This is where you will find the best travel deals and deals! China is still one of the best value places in the world.

5. South Korea

Changing the guard at the palace in South Korea
South Korea is a country that is not talked about enough. To me, South Korea is one of the world's greatest "undiscovered" travel destinations – its prices rival those of Southeast Asia, it's high-tech, the food is delicious and eclectic, the countryside is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and the nightlife is out of the world. Is out of. It is one of the lowest rated travel destinations out there. 1,100. with South Korean currency Won Only a few thousand per $1 USD and most everything costs WonIt's hard to bust your budget here. My friend and I went out to Korean BBQ with drinks, and we each spent $8. You can pick up bottles of beer at 7-Eleven for less than a dollar. Trains are cheap. Everything is cheap here - plus it's fun and different! If you're looking for a budget trip to Asia, visit South Korea. There are lots of international flights to here!

6. India

Country side in India
While always a cheap country, the Indian rupee used to climb as high as Rs 39 against the US dollar. Now, you get 73 rupees in dollars - that's about 50 percent more money to travel. Unless you book a five-star resort and eat only Western food, you'll find it hard to spend $50 a day here. You can get around $30 by staying in cheap guest houses, staying on second class trains, and avoiding Western food. With a rich cultural history, top-class cuisine, helpful and curious locals, incredible regional diversity, great tea and much more to do, India is just a cheap travel destination – a cheap backpacking destination. It is a vast space that is best explored either in one big trip or in a few small parts. Either way, don't miss India.

7. Eastern Europe

Veliko Tarnovo, a small town near Bulgaria
Far Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova) is the cheapest part of the continent. It's a sin that most people don't go much into this area. I was living like a king for less than $40 a day, paying $8 a night for a room in Ukraine, $1.50 for a liter of beer in Bulgaria, and a few dollars for transportation. Eastern Europe has the charm and beauty of the West, without the high prices or crowds of tourists you'll find in Paris, Prague or Barcelona. They are not the poor ex-communist countries most people still believe in them. If you're looking for something off the beaten path, come to this region of the world.

8. Portugal

Cityscape of Lisbon, Portugal
Not all euro countries are created equal, and Portugal is one of the bargain countries in the region – and one of my favourites. I fell in love with the country the first time I visited – how could I not, with beautiful beaches, wine country, stunning cliffs, delicious food, charming locals and historic towns all at bargain prices. Portugal has become a lot more popular and crowded in recent years. Lisbon has become especially expensive as people moved there and raised prices. Great place after all! However, once you leave Lisbon, the prices are still relatively cheap, even if the crowds are a little bigger these days!

9. Australia

Australian Outback
While an unlikely candidate has to be listed on a list of "cheap destinations" because it is known to be incredibly expensive, Australia can also be incredibly cheap – if you know a few tricks! Thanks to plenty of work exchange opportunities, a well-worn budget backpacker trail, plenty of Couchsurfing hosts and cheap groceries, you can visit Australia on a budget. Additionally, Australia has become cheaper as a 20% depreciation in the Australian dollar has offset that price increase and made Australia one of the most affordable in years.

10. Thailand

Ko Tarato National Park in South Thailand
On just about every list for budget travel, Thailand is where it all began for me, so it holds a special place in my heart. This is where I decided to quit my job and travel the world. I lived there. I loved there. Thailand is incredible. With a tourist route dating back decades, Thailand is the heart of backpacking in Southeast Asia, and you can get in between $25-30 per day for cheap guesthouses, food, local buses, and attractions. If you spend all of your time on the islands and in expensive accommodation, expect to pay close to $50 USD per day. However, even on the price, Thailand is still one of the most bargain destinations in the world and should not be missed!

I believe most of the world's destinations can be explored on a budget without too much comfort (without, I even traveled to Iceland on $50 a day). If you are a savvy traveller, you know how to maximize your money wherever you are in the world. But your mission to find the cheapest places to travel in the world is much easier when the places you are visiting are already affordable.
